We are looking forward to another great year for our youngest skiers in the club. The program had their first dry land training on November 27, where parents and athletes met with  coaches! We had many returning and a few new athletes come out for the morning and they had a ton of fun. Our next dry land training dates are December 4th and 11th from 9:30 to 11:30 am.  The 2011-2012 Nancy Greene calendar is posted on the right of our home page.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Nancy Greene Snow Stars is the Martock Ski Race Club’s entry level program for kids 10 and under. It is a program geared towards fun, improving skiing skills and safety. Ski equipment and lift pass are the responsibility of the parent / guardian. Prior ski experience is a pre requisite for the program as skiers must be able to get up and down the hill with limited help.

The Nancy Greene Ski League is the grass roots program of Alpine Canada Alpin. While national in scope, it is operated by the provincial associations and the many affiliated ski clubs across the country. Nancy’s philosophy, that children’s competition should promote participation and fun and de-emphasize winning, has stood the test of time. The program has been successful in introducing thousands of children, to alpine skiing.

Our club introduces children to basic ski techniques and skills, basic safety rules, and team-work. Enjoyment of the sport and the mountain environment are also emphasized. Our program also introduces children to competition. We host an event at Ski Martock and encourage participation at other provincial events. Racing for the Nancy Greene/Husky Snow Stars is always done in the team format. A prime concern is to avoid too much pressure on novice racers. ‘Ski racing for the fun of it!’ is the philosophy of any Nancy Greene/ Husky Snow Stars program.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
The program is  Saturday and Sunday. We want to maximize skiing and minimize waiting and freezing in lift lines – therefore early in the season, when skiing tends to be popular and the hill often is not completely open, we end our day earlier. The program also runs a three day camp over Christmas. Click the Nancy Greene calendar for more information.

Typical Day at Martock:

The children meet with their coaches in front of the Martock Ski Race Club at 8:45 for a stretch and warm up before hitting the slopes. The children ski in larger groups at the ski camp with a variety of coaches. This helps with early evaluation. The children are then broken into smaller groups of 8-12 and have 1 or 2 regular coaches for the rest of the season. The coaches work on skill development with an emphasis on fun. The activities are varied along with the ski terrain. The groups usually break mid-morning. If the program goes into the afternoon, there is also a one hour lunch break. Skiers usually eat together however we encourage parents of younger children to be available to help with lunch and bathroom breaks. Skiers can be picked up at the end of the day by the large tree outside the lodge.

For those racers age 9 and up interested in developing their racing skills can participate in K1 coaching sessions from 8 -9 am on Saturday and Sunday as well as 6-8pm on Wednesday evening. There is an additional fee for participation.

THE PROGRAM
Our Nancy Greene program follows the Husky Snow Stars program, Alpine Canada’s skill development program for young skiers. It will guide child, parent and coach through the appropriate skill progression. The goal of Snow Stars is to develop new skiers in a fun and rewarding environment. The Snow Stars Program consists of seven steps that outline key skills that the children require to progress from beginner to the athletic skier, and eventually to learn the basic tactical skills that are needed to learn to be a ski racer.

We plan to evaluate at the beginning, middle and end of the club program. The final evaluation will be recorded in the participant’s file for safe keeping and progress from one year to the next.

2011-2012 Season

December 1, 2011 | Comments Off | N. GREENE

The first of 3 dry land training days for the Nancy Greenes was held Sunday November 27/11.  This was a good time for the kids and parents to meet with some of our coaching staff. It also gave the kids an opportunity to meet with others that will be in the winter program.  We have two more Sundays of dry land left , December 4th, and 11th 9:30-11:30. The Christmas camp will be held for 3 days again this year December 28-30, closing with the BBQ for lunch on the 30. Wish for cold weather so Ski Martock can start making snow!

If you haven’t registered look under the “JOIN” heading and print off your registration pkg.

NG racing

Martock NG in PEI

Martock had 10 Nancy Greene skiers of all ages go to PEI for the race on January 22/23. Here they all are lined up and waiting for the warm-up in the picture. The racers had a great time and everyone had lots of fun at the race.

We also had one brave Nancy Greene racer go to Cape Breton on the following weekend for the Huskey Snow Star Festival.

This weekend coming up is the J English Cup (Saturday February 5th) and the Martock Cranberry Cup Ski Cross Race (Sunday February 6th) for K1 and Entry Level (9 and 10 year old Nancy Greene). We have several NG registered for both events. A big thank you to all the Nanacy Greene parents who are volunteering their time. If you have a younger skier and are not familiar with racing and how the course is set, come by and cheer on our athletes. The Ski Cross is particularly exciting as 4 skiers will be competing with each other at the same time. Don’t forget your cow bells!!

Also, there are still cupon booklets and tickets available for sale in the office.

Great turn out for NG Camp!

January 4, 2011 | Comments Off | N. GREENE

We had a great turn out for the camp on December 28, 29, and 30th. Thank you Martock for having Sundance open and in good shape (despite the lack of natural snow)! The kids skied hard and enjoyed a BBQ and some fun in the snow at the end of the camp.

We have over 50 skiers enrolled in Nancy Greene- Husky Snow Stars program this year. The regular program started on Sunday, January 2nd. We have a terrific line up of coaches this year and are excited to welcome Amanda as part of our team. Amanda is a freestyle coach and will be rotating through the groups doing the bumps and jumps program with the kids. The group who was with her on Sunday sure looked like they were having fun!
